Your Bank Account Is Under Attack!

A caller claiming to be your bank's fraud department tells you to transfer money into a "safe account" to protect it.

Protect yourself

There is no special safe account. Hang up and call your bank using the number on your debit card.

How it works

A caller claiming to be your bank's fraud department tells you to transfer money into a "safe account" to protect it.

The caller may already know your name, bank and the last four digits of your card from an earlier data breach, which makes the call feel legitimate.

Red flags

  • Any mention of a "safe", "holding" or "secure" account
  • Being told not to discuss the call with bank staff or family
  • Pressure to move money before the "attacker" does

If it already happened

If you already paid or gave access: hang up and call your bank from the number on your card to stop or reverse the payment, change any password you read out, and if you installed software or granted remote control, disconnect the computer and call your IT provider. Report the call at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Where OpenEFA fits

Email filtering can't stop a phone call. The defense here is a habit: hang up, and call back on a number you already trust.
