An Invitation That Steals Your Password

You receive an unexpected party or meeting invitation that asks for your email password to view the event details.

Protect yourself

Contact the organizer independently. Never provide your email credentials to view an invitation.

How it works

You receive an unexpected party or meeting invitation that asks for your email password to view the event details.

Invitations come from real calendar and e-card services, so they pass most filters. The "sign in to view" step is the fake part.

Red flags

  • An invitation from someone you wouldn't expect to invite you
  • Having to enter your email password to see an event
  • An event with no date, place or host details until you log in

If it already happened

If you already clicked and signed in: change that password now, from the real site, and turn on multi-factor authentication. If you sent money, call your bank immediately; wire and ACH recalls work best in the first hours. Tell your IT provider so they can check for forwarding rules and other sign-ins on the account.

Where OpenEFA fits

OpenEFA MailGuard blocks most of these before they reach an inbox. The ones that get through are usually the most carefully targeted, which is why your people still need to know the pattern.
